It is my pleasure to recommend Wendall Chin, a labor organizer who played an indispensable role in my initial election to the California State Assembly.
Mr. Chin was a core member of our field operations team. He recruited and delivered union volunteers for labor-to-labor and general electorate outreach in the March 2004 primary. My district, encompassing Fremont, Union City, Newark, Pleasanton, Castro Valley and unincorporated areas, has not traditionally been considered a labor stronghold.
Through determination and his strong interpersonal skills, Mr. Chin organized dozens of members to walk precincts and staff phone banks each week. This effort culminated in a 175-person Election Day get-out-the-vote effort. This large volunteer crew was unheard of in my District, and clearly played an important role in my 1,000-vote margin of victory.
Mr. Chin also participated in training, dispatching and debriefing volunteers, inventorying materials, and ensuring the smooth operations of the labor campaign. He ensured regular communication with union leaders, coordinated fundraising events, and helped calculate field totals.
I was pleased to work with him after the election during labor legislative conferences and campaigns. I have been impressed by his solid organizing skills, rapport with people from all walks of life, as well as commitment to social justice and electoral politics. I remain grateful for his role in my election and confident of his success in future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Alberto Torrico California State Assembly 20th District
